For both pictures, I kept in mind the Inverse Square Law, which determined the good and bad photo. For the good photo, I made sure that the light being used was far away from the subject, so that it created soft shadows. For the bad photo, I put the light directly below and in front of the model to make sure it gave hard shadows.
